What is application security?

Application security is protecting the software itself, meaning its code, access model, dependencies and delivery pipeline, from being exploited. Most breaches in business software are ordinary: a missing authorisation check, an outdated dependency, leaked credentials. We review what you have, fix the highest risks first, and automate checks so the same problems do not return.

Most breaches in business software are unglamorous. Not sophisticated attacks — an authorisation check missing on one endpoint, a dependency with a known advisory nobody updated, credentials in a repository, or an S3 bucket left open.

Our focus is application security: the code, the access model, and the delivery pipeline. We review what you have, fix what matters most first, and set up the automation that stops the same class of problem returning.

01What we do

What this includes

everything below is in scope, not an upsell
  1. 01

    Application security review

Auditing authentication, authorisation, data handling, and input validation.

  2. 02

    Secure architecture

Designing the security model before the code, where it is far cheaper to get right.

  3. 03

    Access control review

Verifying permissions are enforced server-side and not only hidden in the interface.

  4. 04

    Dependency management

Automated scanning and a patching cadence for known vulnerabilities.

  5. 05

    Secrets and credentials

Getting credentials out of code and into managed secret storage.

  6. 06

    Remediation support

Fixing what is found, prioritised by real exploitability rather than scanner severity.

02When this fits

Situations we see most often

A client or investor is asking

Security questionnaires and due diligence that need real answers about your practices.

You handle sensitive data

Health, financial, or personal data where a breach carries regulatory as well as reputational cost.

Your software has never been reviewed

Built quickly under pressure, with security assumed rather than verified.

You need continuous coverage

Automated scanning and patching in your pipeline rather than an annual audit.

03Before you commit

What to know before you start

What is an application security review?

It is a review of the software itself: reading the code, the access model, the dependencies and the delivery pipeline to find weaknesses before an attacker does. Because it looks inside the application, it finds issues black-box testing often misses, such as an authorisation check absent on one endpoint.

The output is a prioritised findings report with clear remediation steps, followed by a re-test once fixes are made.

What are the most common security issues in business software?

They are rarely sophisticated. Missing or inconsistent authorisation checks, dependencies with known advisories nobody updated, credentials committed to repositories, overly broad cloud permissions, and storage buckets left open account for a large share of real incidents.

Each is cheap to fix once found, which is why systematic review pays off far better than waiting for a breach to reveal them.

How do you stop the same problems coming back?

With automation in the delivery pipeline: dependency scanning, static analysis and secret detection run on every change, so a known-vulnerable package or a leaked key is blocked before it ships.

A deeper review then makes sense annually, or whenever something significant changes, such as a new integration, a new type of sensitive data, or a major refactor.

How do you review the access model?

We map every role and what each can see and change, then test that the rules hold at the server, not just in the interface: whether one customer can reach another's data, whether a regular user can call an admin endpoint, and whether permissions are removed when they should be.

Access control errors are among the most common and most serious findings in business software, and they are invisible to anyone who only looks at the screens.

What should you do while findings are being fixed?

Fix in order of risk, not convenience. Critical findings, such as exposed data or broken access control, are addressed first, sometimes with a temporary mitigation the same day, while lower-severity items are scheduled into normal work.

04Cost and timeline

What drives the cost of a security review?

Review effort follows how much there is to read and how sensitive it is. These factors move it most.

Size of the applicationHighMore code, endpoints and roles mean more to review, and more combinations of access to test.
Number of componentsMediumWeb, mobile, APIs, background jobs and infrastructure each need their own review.
Data sensitivityMediumPersonal, clinical and financial data raise the depth of access-control and encryption checks.
Remediation supportMediumFixing findings ourselves, rather than reporting them, adds engineering time and gets them closed faster.
Compliance mappingMediumMapping controls to ISO 27001, SOC 2 or 21 CFR Part 11 expectations adds documentation work.
Ongoing automationLowAdding scanning to the pipeline is a modest one-time setup that keeps protecting every release.

08FAQ

Questions we get asked

asked on real calls, answered honestly
  1. 01Do you do penetration testing?

We do application security review — reading the code and the access model, which finds a different and often larger class of issue than black-box testing. For formal certified penetration testing, we work alongside specialist firms and handle the remediation.

  2. 02Can you help with compliance requirements?

We build to the technical controls frameworks like ISO 27001, SOC 2, and 21 CFR Part 11 expect — access control, audit logging, encryption, change management. Certification itself involves organisational process and an external auditor, which we support but do not issue.

  3. 03How often should software be reviewed?

Continuously for dependencies, which is automation rather than an event. A deeper architectural review makes sense annually, or whenever something significant changes — a new integration, a new data type, or a major refactor.

  4. 04Do you need access to our source code?

Yes, for an application security review. Reading the code is what lets it find issues black-box testing misses. Access is scoped, logged and covered by an NDA if you want one.

  5. 05What do we receive at the end?

A prioritised findings report with severity, evidence and remediation steps for each issue, and a re-test confirming which are resolved.

  6. 06Can you review our cloud configuration too?

Yes, as part of the review: storage access policies, network exposure, identity and access permissions, and secrets handling, which is where many real incidents begin.
